2010-11 Art Program
Bogolan Printmaking by 1st and 2nd Grade
Grades 1 and 2 have recently finished a unit of work on Bogolan inspired printmaking. Throughout the unit, students learnt about Bogolan printing as a traditional Malian art form and its process. Students looked at a variety of Bogolan prints and identified shapes and patterns they could see. As a grade we discussed what some of these symbols represent. Students then recreated these symbols in their own way, which I then cut out to create a stencil for this printmaking activity.
Textured Abstract Art by 2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade


Earlier this semester 3rd and 4th Grade completed a unit on Abstract Art. Students explored ways to use line, shape, colour and texture to create interesting patterns and designs. Using recycled paper and African printed material, grades 3 and 4 created a textured, abstract piece.
Pointillism Painting: Van Gogh Inspired Sunflowers by 5th Grade
Throughout this painting unit, students looked at well-known artwork by Seurat and Van Gogh. Students painted their own flowers after looking at and discussing Van Gogh’s famous ‘Warm Flowers’. Students painted their pieces using a painting style known as pointillism, for which Seurat was so well known. Students learnt about warm and cool colors and how to create color contrast in their work.

Andy Warhol Pop Portraits - 7th Grade
To conclude this semester’s painting unit, 7th graders painted Andy Warhol inspired pop portraits of themselves. Students took photos of themselves using Photoshop and digitally transformed them into a ‘Warhol’ style. Students learnt how to draw in perspective and how to re-create and enlarge an image by using a grid. They leant about hue and how to create color contrast while choosing appropriate color schemes to fit this theme.

Linoleum Printmaking - High School
‘My Sense of Place’
High School students have recently finished a printmaking unit this quarter. The theme for this unit was ‘My Sense of Place’. Students created an image that portrayed their place in the world, exploring what is means to be connected to community and environment and the importance of identity and belonging. Many of the students used symbols in their work to represent their feelings and where home is for them.
