Student Advisory Curriculum

AISB is committed to the education of the whole child, and provides counseling and advising curriculum for students at all levels.

Elementary Advisory Program

Elementary students receive an integrated Advisory curriculum addressing the following broad areas:

  • Conflict resolution
  • Friendships skills
  • Understanding differences
  • Communication and respect
  • Personal safety and health
  • Bullying prevention
  • Assertiveness training
  • Life changes and transitions

Kelso’s Choice Conflict Resolution

Kelso’s Choice is a program to help young people learn a lifelong conflict resolution tool. Conflict or disagreement is normal when children get together. However, we believe hurtful words, gestures, or physical attacks are unacceptable ways to deal with conflict. Our goal is to teach students better ways to deal with minor problems and to help them with serious problems.

With this program, we teach students that they are strong enough and smart enough to resolve their own minor problems. Students develop the skills to identify problems, the source of the problem, and how to resolve it. They learn strategies to create understanding and make choices. They also identify when it is necessary to seek adult intervention.

By using Kelso’s Choice students develop effective problem-solving skills that they can use again and again. Knowing what to do will help students reduce the stress and number of conflicts they have at school and at home. For more information on implementing Kelso’s Choices in the home, visit Kelso’s Choice on the web.

Secondary School Advisory Program

Each Secondary grade level has an designated Advisor, and Advisory classes meet Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Advisory curriculum at each grade level provides social, emotional, academic and behavioral support to all students, and includes:

  • Metacognitive learning and study skills
  • Physical, emotional and sexual health
  • Personal safety
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Intercultural competence
  • Career and life path exploration
  • College readiness

AISB's Child Protection curriculum, an essential part of Advisory at every level, builds upon the Child Protection Handbook of the Association of International Schools in Africa.
